Do you have recipes that have been used in your family for generations?
My Mom was a country girl; I was one until the end of my sixth grade, when my parents moved to a small town outside of Omaha. I always helped Mom cook supper so making gravy and mashed potatoes were second nature. My mother cooked everything from scratch.
This is something I still love to do. Sometimes, we use instant potatoes but I don’t really enjoy them. And our granddaughter has also come to enjoy mashed potatoes from “scratch.” Everything tastes better from scratch!
Another tradition for our family is on your birthday, you get to choose the evening meal. This year, our granddaughter ordered, steak, real mashed potatoes, homemade onion rings, fresh green beans, rice and chocolate cake from scratch.
When I was young and still living at home, I started collecting my favorite recipes from my mother on recipe cards. I have enjoyed adding to the collection as we tried and enjoyed new recipes. I now have a whole OneNote notebook full of recipes.
In 2013, I decided to make a hard-back recipe book for our kids using a software called Storybook. Storybook is now owned by FOREVER and called Artisan. I love this software! I make all kinds of scrapbooks and storybooks like this one to share with our family.
The recipe book includes the recipes but also the stories that go along with them. I loved including pictures of my family members too. I am thankful that I collected recipes from Jim’s side of the family. It is a lot of fun sharing these with our granddaughter. Now I need to make a new book with more favorites to share with her.
