Today, January 28th, is Data Privacy Day!
Do you think about data privacy when you go on-line or sign up for that free app or game? Do you ask yourself “is it worth the amount of information required to get access?” A game does not need to know your age or where you live.
So how do you protect yourself?
Accept the fact that most free e-mail, apps, games or articles will use your e-mail address and name to sell to others who use the information to market their products. You will get SPAM in your Inbox. Or choose not to use them.
When you get an e-mail with a link to your credit card account; resist clicking that link. Go to the vendor website to login and check your account instead.
You can help protect yourself with long passwords, using different passwords for each account and being aware of e-mail scams engineered to create anxiety and hasty decisions such as clicking on that link or attachment.
If you get a call from the utility company threatening to shut off your power within the hour for lack of payment; don’t provide any information. I received such a call on our business account. The caller claimed they hadn’t received last month’s payment. I happened to have the current invoice laying on my desk with last month’s payment posted. So, stop and take a breath when you get these calls or e-mails. I always use an excuse of I need to talk with my bookkeeper or husband about that and get back to you. Then I ask for their number. Of course, I never call the number. In this case, I called the utility and reported the issue. Yes, they already knew about the scam.
A little awareness goes a long way!
Do you want to save your photos and family history in one place where they will be safe?
