This weekend, I managed to find time to scan more of our slides. This project will take many more hours to complete but I hope to accomplish this task by the end of this year. The box of slides had pictures of our son at six weeks old. Jim was in Florida on business and James & I went with him. James had his first plane ride, got his feet in the Atlantic Ocean and had his first boat ride on that trip. Those memories are precious!
We also have a lot of memorabilia that needs to be scanned. So when my fingers got sore from scanning slides, I scanned Jim’s grandfather’s spelling book from 1916 to PDF and three pages as JPGs so I can use those in a Photo Book later.
Initially, these items were something I knew I wanted to keep but didn’t put much thought into how to organize them. It was a little more complicated when you didn’t have the digital camera and scanner! With a digital camera and a scanner, it makes memories easier to document.
You might ask why do we need to scan all this stuff. A week ago, without warning, a switch attached to our furnace in the basement had a meltdown. Smoke filled the room but we couldn’t tell where it was coming from! That was scary! Thankfully, there was no fire. But it was too close for comfort. It made me think about what we would lose in a fire! It’s not the things you can replace that I am concerned about! It’s the photos, the grandchildren’s artwork and the 1916 Spelling Book that I’m most concerned about. It’s the sentimental value.
So how do I protect these documents? I take pictures of the artwork, scan the documents and save them on my computer. If that were all completed before a fire, I might not have the original but I would have an electronic document to remember those people and pass the family history to the next generation.
What’s hiding in your closet that you have forgotten? Would you miss it if a fire destroyed them?
Life is busy…if you need help scanning those documents that can’t be replaced, I can help. Let’s get them scanned and stored safely on-line. It’s easier than you think!
